Statement

Scarpino is nationally recognized for her skillful and metaphorical sculptures in wood. Here, she turned a piece of spalted maple into a simple but subversive form. The title, Not a Hollow Vessel, is a play on a much more common form, a hollow vessel. Such “empty vessels” draw uneasy comparison to the female body and the fact that woodturning is still largely dominated by men. Scarpino turns this metaphor around, centering her own feminist perspective.
