Artist Statement

I first “met” Letty when Mark Sfirri gave us a tour of the Warton Esherick Museum during the Windgate Residency. Letty was Esherick’s wife. Mark told us of Wharton’s affairs with other women, Letty’s long-term illness, and their struggles to maintain a solid family life. My heart went out to Letty. This ship is my tribute to Letty Esherick, and I named it Letty, written on the ship, blended with the lines of spalting. Metaphorically I have set Letty free, but more importantly, I have freed myself of negative thoughts about Warton. They lived their lives; I live mine, sailing freely.
